Omaggio: Music composed to honor

Omaggio: Music composed to honor

Sat October 22, 2016 at 8:00 pm

Throughout the centuries composers have crafted music to honor individuals; serenades written by Johanes Brahms were dedicated to Clara Schumann or Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony crafted to honor Napoleon Bonaparte. Choral music shares in this history; Josquin’s Missa Hercules dux Ferrariae was dedicated to Ercole d’Este I, Duke of Ferrara and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna written in honor of his mother. All are examples of music written to pay homage or tribute. Our twelfth season begins with four unaccompanied works also written to honor. Join the de Angelis singers for an evening of tribute, featuring music of Palestrina, Howells, Rutter, and the rarely performed Omaggio de Marenzio of Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen.
