The De Angelis Vocal Ensemble will begin its 10th season Saturday at the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano with a program of unusual historical interest. The music to be performed is homegrown, rarely heard and little-known. It took a bunch of fourth-graders to finally get it done.
“We’ve been struggling for a couple years trying to find a really, really solid educational outreach piece for our organization,” said Matthew Gray, artistic director of De Angelis. “We didn’t want to just do our choir performance at an elementary school and just leave.”
Gray finally hit upon a way to connect his outreach program with what the students were already studying in school.
“We’re actually blending music with the grade four Common Core curriculum for social studies,” Gray said. “We’re making links between music and what the children are actually studying for their mission project in grade four.”Read Full Article
